haven't seen the movie yet, but what always got me in the musical version of No One Mourns (by OG Broadway cast to be exact - it's the one I heard the most songs in) is how Glinda's voice goes very high and she seems to sing "no one mourns!" and then "no one!" and it's clear she's having some really intense not so festive emotions unlike the choire, and then you learn the whole story, listen to it again and go "ah; she's mourning and can't show or tell anyone about it and has to play her part"
a theater youtuber I watch sometimes pointed out in his Wicked review that once you've seen Wicked once, its always good to really watch Glinda in No One Mourns the Wicked because whoever is playing her has to make some choices in how they portray her in this moment. Like how good of an actor they think Glinda is, how much she would slip up and show her true feelings versus also not making it too obvious for people who are seeing it for the first time. Its always soooo interesting to see how Glinda is done in this moment, and I specifically looked out for how Ariana did it when I went rewatch the movie and its sooo good imo. Honestly I pretty much immediately stopped thinking of her as Ariana Grande and started just thinking of her as Glinda because of how well she pulled off No One Mourns the Wicked and when she specifically slipped up and let her emotions show
and if we're talking about Glinda's voice, one of the only times we hear her hit those really high notes again (and actually in the obc recording, the highest notes she hits at all) is in Thank Goodness, where the fact that she's lying to the people of Oz and putting on a front is obvious even first time around and kind of the point of the song. Its also the song where she is bluntly saying "this is bad. this isn't what I wanted. I've crossed so many lines without even realizing it and I'm putting on this fake happy face and lying because this is what I've been made into"
and contrast that with, say, For Good, where Glinda is singing the low parts of the song. When we see her at her worst and lying and putting on a fake persona, she's hitting the whistle tones and being very showy, but at her truest and most honest moment where she's getting this one final moment with Elphaba, the only person alive who knows her and loves her and wants her to be Galinda from Shiz and not Glinda the Good, she's singing the low parts of the song.
probably means something

Are you holding space at the thought of Ariana’s Thank Goodness? I agree with this tweet: https://x.com/charmedcircles/status/1876750061410926891
Ariana knows better than any Glinda before her what it’s like to be a very famous public figure acting out a persona and what’s it like to experience tragedy and still go up on stage and perform and bring joy to her fans. She and Jon Chu talked about the parallels between her life and Glinda’s and those informed the movie version.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/ariana-grande-wicked-oscars-music-love-1236132418/
also, the mean girl from Victorious is Liz Gillies, and she and Ariana have been friends since their Broadway days (they were in 13). Look up the skits they did together of the movie Best in Show a few years ago.
Not even joking I am ALWAYS ~holding space~ for Thank Goodness lol, it’s actually my favorite song in Wicked. Can’t even tell you how much I agree with that tweet - I know all the other gelphie shippers are anxiously awaiting For Good, but honestly Thank Goodness is going to shatter me right from the very beginning. As far as I’m concerned it is THE Glinda song, as much, if not more than, Popular (physically restraining myself from writing a whole essay on how Thank Goodness is the cruel-irony-twist on the seemingly lighthearted themes Glinda introduces in Popular and how having those two songs build off each other like that is an actual lance to the heart).
…Okay I got in my feelings and obviously had to re-listen to the OG Broadway version - esp starting at 3:45 through the end, that whole long solo is the moment little child me fell hard for Glinda as the most tragic and conflicted character I’d ever encountered in my little life at that point. I love a character having to hide all the pain and regret and self-doubt in the world behind a smile, that’s my sweet spot - I can already tell Ariana’s interpretation of it is gonna fuck me up for the rest of my life and I’ll never be the same again. So yes. Holding space and whatnot. It’s gonna hurt.
Thanks for sending me that article too, I feel like I'm getting a crash course in Ariana lore here. She’s such a good little bean who’s been through some truly horrific shit but has tried to do some real good in the world because of it. Some of those One Love Manchester performances are absolutely heartbreaking.

okay, but i NEED to talk about the junior players production of be more chill... i have found exactly one (1) post talking about this version, but god, i honestly think it's my favourite? maybe even more so than the og two rivers production...i wish they had comments turned on on youtube, but instead i'll have to ramble here.
maybe it's me having my actor-brain turned on too much when watching any theatre, but i just think all the actors did exactly what i really wanted them to do; all the comedic beats landed, the emotional paths feel connected, lines and pauses are given the space they need, plus everyone was so committed physically and the vocal performances fucking eat.
i really like every choice that every actor made. jeremy's actor has amazing chemistry with michael, christine, the squip, and basically every character he interacts with. he felt nerdy pre-squip, he felt cool during the squip, he felt comfortable in himself post-squip. he was just a really believable teenager and loveable guy.
christine is so unabashedly weird in a way i kind of miss in the broadway version (and to an extent, the two rivers version...shh dont sue me).
michael is actually chill and funny and comfortable with himself, which is exactly what makes mitb sooo gutwrenching (again, felt this was DEFO missing in the broadway version... broadway michael, i have opinions about you)
and the squip!! when he walked on as ted from bill and ted my jaw actually dropped THAT MADE ME SO HAPPY!!!! there is not nearly enough bill and ted appreciation in this world...and the actor nailed keanu's mannarisms sooo fucking good. plus, the progression then of jeremy's squip going from essentially a chill teenager as ted to a far more powerful and ominous entity as neo from the matrix? REALLY cool costuming choice and progression, i fucking love it.
plus there were just so many stupid little details in the background that ALL the actors did that i might ramble about in another post (mostly rich. i really like rich's little moments. in all productions tbh).
i also really like how they DIDN'T let the original version affect their production design. obviously the og has a very iconic look and i can see why most other productions sort of follow its costume/set designs and character choices, especially as it's a musical that largely blew up because of the fandom, and fandoms sort of cling onto the original of any version (not a criticism /gen, that's just how it is). but i think the best thing about theatre is that every production you see has the potential to be totally different. in both design/look, and the actors' choices as well.
which is i think why i watched, like, every version i can get my hands on this past week; because i just really wanted to see different versions. different line deliveries and beats and motivations and all the boring actory stuff. (and also because unlike tv shows, there's alas wayy less content to consume, so you take everything you can get yaknow)
and i just love love love how different this version is, oh my god i just. can't. its sort of seperate in my head to the two rivers version tbh? i've seen people talk about how they see broadway bmc and two rivers bmc as almost like different stories, and that's definitely what i'm feeling right now. in terms of fandom and art and how the show exists in my brain as a concept, i do adore og bmc. but as a wholly seperate story that i could genuinely watch over and over again and not get bored, i just fucking love the junior players one. its like...that's MY be more chill. in my own perfect world, that's the real one.
this really does sound like im slagging off og bmc, but please please know that i am not. honestly, i've enjoyed and saved every version i've watched, from the broadway bootleg to high school productions to animatic versions. but i just want to share my love for this particular version...idk, maybe it has LOADS of fans (the youtube vid has like 1k likes so idk), but alas because the comments are turned off, i haven't gotten to see anyone else raving about it. i don't even know any of the actors names, which SUPER sucks cuz they're fucking awesome.
anyway, ramble over (for now). please go watch the junior players production if you haven't, its worth it i swear. if you have seen it, please yell at me in my ask box, i will be over the moon.
#i doubt many will see this but i desperately want them to#this production just. god. maybe its tailored specifically to how i see the story#but MAN its just so good!! i want people to love it!!#and boy do i wanna draw how the characters look#i fucking love michaels yellow vest jacket thing GRR HE LOOKS SO DOPE#and jeremy and christine OUGHK MY HEART#their chemisty is so fucking cute i am rooting for them so bad#crop top rich will save me#OKAY ILL SHUT UP NOW#just. watch it. please#be more chill#bmc musical#be more chill junior players#bmc junior players#i will populate those non existent tags if its the last thing i do#zoot.posts

7 Albums tag game
Got tagged by @redheadsramblings thank you kindly :3
Rules: you just got a kind of shitty old car and it doesn't have bluetooth. You can only buy 7 CDs and you can't repeat an artist. What are you getting?
Alright, so I’m doing this but expect me to either be very predictable or really fucky! I also chose to explain each choice because I’m a useless motherfucker and have to yap… I’m sorry. Lol
1. Hozier - Unreal Unearth: Unending
Unreal Unearth is probably one of my favorite albums of all time. I love the curation of the songs. I love the story. It’s one of the few albums to make me cry. But I specify the Unending version because I don’t think I’ve gone a week without listening to Through Me (The Flood) at least once. It’s chronic.
2. Dave Malloy - Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
My favorite musical of all time ever. I listen to this shit constantly. Denée Benton has fundamentally changed my brain chemistry with just the way she signs “Moonliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight” in No One Else. It’s honestly everything to me. And like c’mon, it’s Josh Groban? What the fuck are we talking about? (Don’t get me started on Okieriete Onaodowan learning how to play the accordion only to barely play Pierre for like a month or else I’ll start crying it’s so fucking tragic and I love him)
3. Life is Strange Soundtrack
Okay this is me BARELY cheating. Life is Strange (original) DOES IN FACT have a CD… it’s just really only available on e-bay between like $50-200. Now, I’m not saying I’m in my right mind but in a hypothetical universe where I could both drive and also require a CD player, lowkey it’d be worth it. I adore the soundtracks across all the games but the OG just has a very special place in the void where my heart once used to be. (No longer because after the bae vs bay choice I was never the fucking same)
4. Gorillaz - Humanz
I DONT WANNA FUCKING HERE IT- Okay so I’m a pretty decent fan of Gorillaz overall and I remember this album coming out and everyone absolutely shitting themselves in rage. Idk why everyone hated it. It’s a good as album. Like pretty consistently just bops. The concept is fun, songs are good, great features. Seriously, I do not understand where the hatred comes from shjeoewhwkjdj
5. Shawn James - The Dark & The Light
Fun fact about me. Before DA consumed my entire existence, I was a MAJOR Red Dead girlie. Still am but I try to be normal about it. A big fic I was working on for like a year was an rdr2 fic that will probably never truly see the light of day. But when I write fics, I curate music to fit the story. Shawn James was my fucking GOAT and I still love his music! I love all his albums but this one is probably my favorite. (He’s also consistently the artist who records covers that I love more than the original. Do yourself a fucking favor and listen to his covers of Ain’t no Sunshine and Bad Moon Rising. Fucking elite)
6. Matt Maeson - That’s My Cue: A Solo Experience
I’m cheating a tiny bit with this one. This is a live album and doesn’t exist on CD but I’m aware that I could theoretically burn a CD (even though I’ve never done it lol) so I’m including it cuz I vastly prefer the live album with the stripped instrumentals.
7. Pierce The Veil - Collide With The Sky
I almost didn’t pick any of my emo faves. For a few years there I actually didn’t listen to much of my teen music! But fucking damnit this album is good. It’s like actually incredible.
^ but with this in mind. If any of y’all can get behind a heavier sound, pretty progy, check out Ok Goodnight! I love them! There’s some PTV influence on them as well and they just barely missed my cut for this list with The Fox and The Bird. Very good band! Very fun! Love them!!!
I don’t really have too many people to tag but the first person I thought of tagging when I got this was @summerfirewood !! Idk if you’ve already done this but I’m very curious cuz I feel like you have great music taste lol
#mojo rambles even when no one asked them to#when I say ramble I fucking mean it bitch#you could not pay me to shut up

I wanna see the warriors concept album brought to life in a visual medium. And I know everyone's assuming straight to broadway bc of lin, the cast, it being a musical, etc. But broadway is so limiting for a story like this
This needs to be done as a film. A movie musical and honestly I think maybe an animated one. Stylistically done in a graffiti inspired and street art inspired art style. With style changes that line up with the different types of music
The warriors is a cult classic urban story. Street tagging and street art are inherent in that and the colors and vibrancy it affords I think is SO PALPABLE in the songs. This concept album is so visual in its musicality it's insane.
I think a live action would be great too! We love a good made in ny film, especially when it uses locations properly and showcases the true bones of the city. But I think continuing the revolution of western animation would serve this story so well and spotlight under served artists and art styles
Plus if it's a movie we can get most if not all of the OG cast bc you KNOW they're not having some of these stars perform 8 shows a week and we NEED this sound and THIS version to be seen

i just learned that the hazbin cast wasn’t replaced for legal reasons and that it was all a decision
i will admit i am slightly disappointed, but then again, it was a pilot episode and people were bound to get recast—i just didn’t expect it to be the whole cast, and while i am a bit sad about that, i’m honestly hopeful. the new cast so far seems great and i’m sure they’ll do an amazing job.
a lot of people are still saying that it was a popularity contest, and you COULD make that argument about any cast replacement besides angel dust’s replacement. blake roman is not a well-known name at all, and the reason why people know his name now is because of hazbin. google lists him as a musician, but as far as i know (i could be wrong! please correct me if so!) all of his stuff that is available to stream are past theater roles with like ten other people per song, and some of his og songs on soundcloud. that is not a well-known name, simply and plainly, so michael kovach clearly wasn’t replaced so that they could have a bigger name play angel dust. i assume it was to have someone with musical experience play angel dust. i love michael kovach and his work so so so much but at this point i can’t deny how good of an angel dust blake roman is, and i’m excited to hear how he’ll do on the full show even if i’ll miss michael. plus, blake roman sounds awfully similar to pilot angel dust, only with a slight difference. it sounds more natural in my opinion, and i really like it.
(i have seen a lot of people say that michael was replaced because of his association with ashley, but i could not find concrete evidence of this so i’m not going to believe that just yet.)
with husk’s replacement, i assume that keith david being such a big name was actually a factor in that, and his voice for husk is pretty different from mick’s—but hey, it’s keith david. i love keith david, and i’m going to give him a chance. i am sad that it sounds so different and i am sad that mick was replaced but i’m going to give keith a chance.
so far i’m most upset with ed bosco being replaced, but in the same way that michael has stated that he doesn’t think he could go on with the show without ed, i don’t think ed would either. i’m not saying he was offered the role and he turned it down, in fact i genuinely do not think that that is the case, but with angel dust being replaced i don’t see it very possible that alastor wouldn’t be as well so i’m going to stop being sad about it. once again, i’m going to give amir talai a chance, and so far he’s doing a good job—even if i don’t personally like it as much as bosco’s alastor.
i’m confused as to why vivziepop stated that she didn’t want any of the cast replaced and then replaced all of them—she implied that she was going to at least try to keep them so i’m disappointed in the false promises. but, the show must go on, and while i am disappointed, i am not upset and i have not lost hope. i will forever miss the original cast but i cannot wait to see how the new cast does.
i also want to talk about the trailer formatting for hazbin. i see a lot of people upset that it was formatted like “omg big name you should watch!!” but trailers are advertisements, and the point of advertisements is to get people to watch, and showing big names in a trailer is a way to get people to watch…? idk, a lot of people seem surprised and disappointed that a trailer did this when that’s kind of the point?
all in all, i don’t think that the cast got replaced solely because the new actors are more famous—i think the biggest factor is that the new cast are all very talented in the music world, and that’s why they’re famous. while i am upset that they replaced everyone, and i’m sure the fame is a factor, i can understand how exciting it would be for a tv series creator (who is definitely a theater kid) to have their entire cast for a musical cartoon be broadway actors. if you’re disappointed, that’s okay. if you’re upset, that’s okay. but i urge you to give the new actors a chance and try to remain positive—don’t we already have enough negativity in our world? especially surrounding hazbin hotel?

So. I need to know people better even if it’s just mutuals on Tumblr.
And I saw you wanted asks, so :)
1. What’s your favourite song(s)?
2. What’s your favourite film (apart from dps)?
3. You have a three hour car trip, and you can choose only one artist to listen to, who?
4. If you travel, what’s the best country you’ve been to?
5. What’s your favourite colour?
6. What’s your favourite album?
7. Who’s your favourite person in the world?
8. Do you prefer cats or dogs?
9. Who’s the prettiest person you’ve ever seen?
10. Who’s your favourite fictional character?
hiii!! hope you are well. tysm for the ask <333
1. What’s your favourite song(s)?
omgggg this is so hard. i'll just name off a few as of late. the man who can't be moved - the script, jealous - nick jonas, silver springs - fleetwood mac, lover you should've come over - jeff buckley, fake plastic trees - radiohead, no. 1 party anthem - arctic monkeys, back to december - taylor swift, enchanted - taylor swift, out of the woods - taylor swift, the black dog - taylor swift.... you get it
2. What’s your favourite film (apart from dps)?
ahhh another tough question. i love the lord of the rings trilogy specifically two towers is my favorite <33 (the extended editions too ofc). i also love newsies (1992) unfortunately not a fan of the broadway but definitely an og film girl at heart. some others are the sound of music, true grit (2010), ford v ferrari, and stardust :))
3. You have a three hour car trip, and you can choose only one artist to listen to, who?
TAYLOR SWIFTTTT. ik its basic but idc loll.
4. If you travel, what’s the best country you’ve been to?
i want to travel so bad!! i've always wanted to go to europe and new zealand </3. the only place i've been besides the u.s. is canada haha which was lovely but not exactly super different.
5. What’s your favourite colour?
i love earth tones!! probably sage green is my favorite but i've been really into browns lately too.
6. What’s your favourite album?
again it's so hard to pick just one but one that always comes to mind is cleopatra by the lumineers. i also am really starting to love the tortured poets department by taylor swift (even though i've also loved all of her other albums ofc). andddd probably rumors by fleetwood mac is another one.
7. Who’s your favourite person in the world?
probably my irl best friend!! (who co-wrote my lady ginny btw chat)
8. Do you prefer cats or dogs?
cats cats cats. i like dogs but as i've gotten older i've discovered i vibe with cats more.
9. Who’s the prettiest person you’ve ever seen?
HAH i'm inclined to say a multitude of celebrities but i think that's kind of superficial to say. i can't name one specific person honestly, beauty is not only subjective but ever evolving and complex beyond just appearances, so even if i chose one person now that could change by tomorrow.
10. Who’s your favourite fictional character?
gahhh idk. there's so many!! like songs and movies there's so many i like and the favorite changes all the time. i love legolas, faramir, and eowyn from lord of the rings, mattie ross from true grit, arthur morgan from rdr2, andddd maybe harry and hermione from harry potter?? and OF COURSE my dps faves: charlie, ginny, meeks, and pitts.

-My Personal Mean Girls Movie Musical Song Ranking-
*The ranking will be based on the song in comparison to the Broadway show (how well it changes and/or honors the source material), how good it stands on its own, and my own thoughts. I have not/am not planning on watching the movie so this ranking is purely based off of the soundtrack available. I feel overall neutral when it comes to the OG musical and movie. I will not be counting Not My Fault; it's a bop but not part of the musical.
12. Stupid With Love: Same energy (or lack thereof) as What Ifs. It is very clearly modified to sound like a modern pop song. Just like What Ifs, Kady’s singer is not in a character voice. There are repetitive back vocals added, it reminds me a lot of Toe Jammer from My Singing Monsters. Stupid With Love (movie ver.) is so low energy that it doesn’t really match the situation our main character is in (falling head over heels for a boy in her math class). Much more boring/annoying than What Ifs and overall not a good song, in a pop OR musical setting.
11. Meet the Plastics: A lot less dramatic and a lot more serious/”adult”. The whole song sounds like the start of World Burn (Broadway). Grechen and Karen don't even sing or introduce themselves; it's only Regina. This song takes itself SO DAMN seriously. They do know that the reason Mean Girl’s is a cult classic is its humor and over the top nature, right?
10. Someone Gets Hurt: The song has a Billie Ellish quality to it; it is very soft-spoken for the most part and includes a lot of whisper singing. Someone Gets Hurt sounds very underwhelming, especially when you compare it to the original Broadway song. The song is supposed to be seductive but also powerful and dramatic. I think they only focused on the seductive part. The instrumentals are all toned down so much that it doesn’t fit the scene it is sung in (Regina kissing Katy’s crush, a big betrayal of their “friendship”). Ignoring the context, I don't think it works as a non musical song either.
9. Apex Predator: This cover is a total enigma to me. It is so weird sounding; the singing, instrumentals, tone, background vocals, pacing. Apex Predator is SO all over the place. Maybe it makes sense in the context of the movie? I honestly have no idea what was going on with this song but it didn’t sound…good. No disrespect to Auli’i or Jaquel; they did the best with the direction they were given. Really disappointing considering Apex Predator was a pretty strong song in the Broadway musical.
8. Revenge Party: This song feels a bit disconnected from itself. The instrumentals don't match the singer’s energy, especially Janis’ strong singing voice. This is a song about getting revenge so why does it sound so mellow? Auli'i vocals are really nice in this song but everything else falls pretty flat. Janis saying “Yes, bitch!” did make me chuckle though; caught me a bit off guard.
7. What’s Wrong With Me?: It is fine for what it is; it gets the job done. Not really a lot to say.
6. What Ifs: A new song written for the movie. The song sounds kinda somber and low energy; very different from the upbeat and hopeful song it is replacing, Roar. Angourie Rice has a nice voice; it’s just very soft and fits much better to a genre like pop. Speaking of pop, that is the weirdest part about What Ifs, it doesn’t sound like a musical theater song at all. What Ifs is a totally fine pop song but in my opinion, it fails in the context of a musical. The song tells us pretty much nothing about Katy or her circumstances. It's just a fine pop song.
5. A Cautionary Tale: The first song (and impression) of the Mean Girls musical movie. A lot more edgy sounding; it sounds like the musical was trying to really stray away from the classic Broadway style as much as they could. It has a lot less singing variety (less note variety, belts, etc.) Some of the stuff that they change, I really don't like (like the background oohs and cut of Janis and Damian’s witty banter). It feels more foreboding and boring than fun and exciting.
Less energy, less of a campy atmosphere :(
4. I’d Rather Be Me: Auli'i vocals are great in this but the instrumentals are underwhelming. I don't know why this movie is straying away from loud and powerful musical choices. Mean Girls is all about drama; why isnt that energy showing up in the music? I’m confused and tired.
3. World Burn: Another song that is super dramatic in context but not in execution. Renee’s riffs and belts are awesome (as always). It's not bad but not very good either.
2. Sexy: Thank you Avantika for giving us some much needed joy to the soundtrack💗! She totally embodies Karen in this song. Sexy has a funky instrumental. Sexy in the movie is very fun!
I See Stars: It’s pretty good. The instrumentals match the energy of the song, the singing is great, the background vocals add a lot, it's just an overall good cover.
Songs cut from songs from Broadway: It Roars, Where Do You Belong?, Fearless, Stop, Whose House Is This?, More Is Better, Do This Thing
Overall: I saw this movie making a bit of negative buzz and as a musical theatre nerd, I wanted to know what everyone was talking about. Based off what I've seen/listened to, Mean Girls is a musical that doesn't want to be a musical. This negatively affects the music. Hopefully studios see the reception and improve this movie's flaws in future projects.

Just found out they made a movie version of Matilda the Musical. As someone who was so obsessed at age 12 that I can still remember most of the lyrics to the songs at age 19, I've decided to chronicle my thoughts as I watch. (NOTE: anytime I mention "the OG" I am referring to the broadway musical, not the book)
I thought the "I can be a solider and shoot you in the face" line was very fun and original. Can't believe they sanitized it and we're not even 3 minutes in.
I am enjoying the "Miracle" segment so far. It's giving music video vibes. (but also, Disney just straight up added the Hamilton stage performance to their streaming service, and I'm already wishing they did that. The show was really fun!)
I thought part of Mrs. Wormwood's denial could've been more convincing if she wasn't obviously pregnant (admittedly they didn't do that in the original either--it's too bad; she should've been in really good shape to still almost make her dancing competition)
They cut Ruuuuuuudolpho the dancer how could they
Library bus is fun but real actual libraries are also great. Mrs. Phelps seems nice so far.
Mr. Wormwood being worried about debt actually makes more sense for him to be doing all his shady stuff.
Miss. Honey seems like she's doing her best.
I take it back the dad's even more of an ass in this--I don't remember him setting her up and then GLOATING ABOUT IT
I liked "Naughty" except for the roof bit; Matila's supposed to be smart, not climbing all over the exterior of her house like an idiot. (note: Movie Matilda is also a bit of a dumbass)
Since Mr. Wormwood is going on about the escapologist, does that mean we're getting less of Mrs. Phelps?--never mind
So is the Trunchbull not the acrobat's sister in this one?
They changed some of the story--she doesn't try to do the *circus announcer voice* "it is the greatest feat EVER known to man"
Kiddo knows that turnabout is fair play
Isaac the lizard might be the best addition to the story (we will see)
"School Song" is simultaneously most similar and most different from the musical and I didn't like it at first (I thought the school gate with the letter blocks was the coolest thing) the way they managed to incorporate a lot of stuff from the original
Nigel panicking about advanced math (relative to himself) is very relatable
They're all so tinyyyyyyyy when you're 12 you don't notice as much
Thinking she meant finish instead of erase, omg kiddo
That booklist, holy crap. I was a reading addict in HS and now the most I read is sections of my textbooks (I love STEM but it's so much workkkkk)
They cut all of "Pathetic" except the last line (don't be pathetic, netflix)
OMG it's the Hammer song (can't remember the official name right now D: oh no) The actress doesn't make the song hit the same way as the OG actress. The recording part is funny though
Honestly the bits of Miss. Honey's voice from the hammer song makes me even more disappointed they didn't include "Pathetic" she sounds good
The dad had a fun song making fun of authors and also the audience; it doesn't lend itself well to movie adaptation but it was funny as hell.
Pretty sure the book that was ripped up in all the previous adaptations was Moby Dick
The dad is even crazier business-wise in this and in the OG he cheated the Russian mafia
"Telekinipsis" you precious child
Wait omfg they brought back Hortensia
I liked "Chokey"
Narcolepsy was kept yay
Poor Amanda
OOOOOOOO evil stepsister (wait was that the original plot anyway?)
It was indeed not the OG plot I now remember "Forgotten by everyone except... the acrobat's sister" was the line
Mrs. Phelps I love you omg
The kid constantly trying telekinesis is so cute
The hug was interrupted how could she
Bruce I hope you get your song
"a pact with Satan and stolen my cake" she's so extra
Yay he got his song!
Where did she even get a teaching certification
"When I Grow Up" had no lyrics changed and yet the vibes were entirely different. I liked the adult ensemble coming in and all the swings and stuff in the OG. Again, Miss. Honey has a great voice and I'm disappointed they cut "Pathetic"
The story sequence was good, but it would've been better if they kept the fire extinguisher foam bit.
Mrs. Phelps ready to call CPS on Matilda's nonexistent aunt
The dad was a comedy figure in the OG why is he like this
The story is back yay and I like that she's putting herself in the daughter's place (we know it's Miss. Honey but she doesn't)
"Don't Cry" was excellent
It's fun that everyone thinks Matilda is a hero
"Smell of Rebellion" is more solid than "Throw the Hammer"
Gym is apparently the hell class
Zeke was a dwarf I think why is he a parrot now???
OMG the telekinesis boy was Eric Ink
I liked this version of "Quiet" but thinking about it now, 90% sure it's called dissociation, kiddo
"My House" was really nice but I feel like the actress was a bit breathy at first; she did better when the song let her push more. (again, she'd be really good with the song "Pathetic" (open the door))
Chokey is supposed to be a tiny closet, not an outhouse
Oh good, they kept the mafia that was a good subplot
*rebels* [insert 50 chokeys here]
THEY CUT REVOLTING CHILDREN THE RATING IS GOING DOWN
WAIT NO NEVERMIND
I like that Hortensia got to be the deuteragonist in the song initially written for her. However, the song wasn't quite as good as the OG version.
The song Miss. Honey sings after the parents drive away I'm 90% sure is movie-musical-only
Isaac deserves the best life I'm glad that Lavender got her bestie back
THE CREDITS VERSION IS THE OFFICIAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING OF WHEN I GROW UP I KNOW THIS SONG (sidenote, I am dancing in my dorm room at 12:25 am and having the time of my life)
Final rating 6.5 to 7 out of 10. Solid, would recommend, but the stage musical is still better. Would listen to my CD of the show rather than watch again.
((I would like to specify that my family IS NOT RICH. There's this option on Broadway that you put your name in a raffle for a show that day (I think? again, I was 12) and if you win the tickets (which are like the last few seats in the theater) are much cheaper. If you are in NYC and you have this option, 10/10 would recommend))

LOVED both the stage and film versions of Wicked. The movie is a great adaptation. The actresses did a fantastic job (and I love that they truly embrace the queerness of it all). They added a few things here and there, which I enjoyed! I appreciate getting to fully see the actresses emotions up close onscreen which you don’t always get onstage (that opening number! And the OzDust! My heart!) It’s great! :D Can’t wait to see it a 4th time in theaters!
uff, i’m jealous :(
i was super excited and really wanted to love it and not be the snobbish twat that’s like “omg it’s not like to og” and honestly i’m usually really not that???? lmao my sister literally recognized songs and could sing them just bc of how much i love them and used to listen to them at home
BUT:
i felt zero chemistry between the girls… THIS HURT ME
ariana felt too disney channel instead of musical extravaganza.
popular sounded freakishly identical to chenoweth’s original to the point it sounded like one of ariana’s well known imitations, instead of her own version. it was a little disappointing.
cynthia lacked that softness elfie has under that green armor. idk, she felt very rough and sharp, like elfie is supposed to be, but the soft parts that are also there inside elfie, were missing to me.
SO LONG and messy and in two parts my friends who don’t know the musical and aren’t musicals and broadway fans were SO confused why it didn’t end like 4 times 😅
no for good???? omg i gasped when it ended with no for good bc there’s a 2nd part 😱

i see your bingo but unfortunately i have forgotten what a character is. can you pick one at random?
Like? Conceptually? Djdjdhdjfhdu
Gretchen Fucking Weiners because I’m jazzed rn-
Gretchen’s so fucking insecure and desperate for love it hurts. Og movie her is the best at ‘being able to be read as a normal person’ but in the other adaptations they push hard that she’s always like 2 minutes from having a panic attack and/or becoming the Joker. I honestly don’t know how much of that is ‘Gretchen probably has some kind of anxiety disorder’ and how much of that is ‘Regina is mean to her and constantly fuels her self loathing to maintain control over her.’ I’m not sure how much those two things can be separated.
Anyway can we talk about how people who compare Mean Girls and Heathers always list her as the Duke counterpart and it’s mostly because she’s a brunette. Like, Duke’s whole thing is powerlust, she was Starscreaming the shit out of Chandler complete with ‘pretending for about 10 seconds to be sad about her death before immediately taking over’ Gretchen would jump off a bridge before taking charge of anything. Duke would be pissed if fucking Veronica tried to be the next Chandler after her death because she gave up everything to be Chandler. Gretchen is pretty happy to have someone in charge of her again because she needs the validation that comes with being someone’s number 2… Also ‘I’m hugging my knees and the captain is pointing- well who made her captain? Still the weakest must go…’ Is more similar to the Brutus meltdown than anything Duke says change my min-
Also… Did they erase her Jewishness from the movie musical? The OG musical mentions it a few times and so does the OG movie. Ashley Park played her on Broadway and A. Was pretty damn good and B. They didn’t stop calling her Jewish. She was just mixed in that version so it’s not because Latina that her heritage is erased. I’d get if they want to avoid the antisemitism in her other portrayals but I think it would have been a better choice to make a larger variety of characters Jewish than to erase that aspect of her you know?
On a THIRD hand holy shit she has so much dialogue in the OG musical that makes me insane. “Sometimes I feel like an IPhone without a case. I know I’m useful and have good functions but at any moment I could just shatter.” “Hug me while my shoulder’s tense, and we’ll pretend we’re fine.” “It’s like all I do is plan for a joy I don’t get to feel.” Just- am I supposed to be normal about those lines? She’s so- just- I want to save her… Possibly get her some Fluoxetine… I want her to explore herself and what she wants and to start feeling like a person damn it! She’s so little… In my hearts once she gets out of High School things start going a bit better for her.

snapdragon, heather and iris 💐
HEY BUD
snapdragon - favourite mythical creature?
GIRL i think it’s very well-advertised that my favorite creature is the werewolf 🌙🐺 i’m known for inserting a werewolf au in every fandom i’m a part of (thankfully 911 has a BUNCH i can be super normal about, including yours :3c)
(not to mention the fursuit and all that jazz lol)
but you also know i have a second place soft spot for dragons ;3 🐉
heather - what’s your favourite musical?
GOOD GOD that’s a hard one because i love so many. phantom of the opera, les mis for classics, we all go through a rent phase as teenagers (i literally saw it once a week for like an entire summer when they basically gave the last row tix away). my ultimate fave was in the heights, i was OBsessed. once on this island, hairspray, once, they’re all good. and honestly, i have a soft spot for disney stage adaptations—the lion king was the first broadway show i saw and it sparked my love of set and costume design. i’m still mad hunchback got cancelled, the songs RULE. and i’ll say it, frozen on broadway was fucking excellent 😤 did you SEE that reindeer costume???

iris - favourite 90s song?
as a millennial, literally all 90s songs are my favorite. BUT since my favorite band ever is HANSON, i gotta go with OG “MMMBop”.
flower asks!

Planning on re-watching the whole season once it's all out, to see how I feel about everything as a whole. Maybe there will be stuff I was too annoyed to notice the first time that I like lol
Of course it's always possible something will tip past the point and into 'why am I doing this to myself' territory xD Either the media disappoints me so much and I drop it (Kingsman sequel...) or its so rage inducing (I hear about a bad ending and don't even end up sticking with it.. Killing Eve. why, I enjoyed you so much I didn't even want to write fic about you) I step away for my own sanity.
SU definitely seemed to get a lot of retroactive flak for the power of love saving the day. And like, I get the critique that such a thing doesn't always work, but that shit is literally a power of love show? Its sort of a remember the genre you're in moment. I think the Owl House also motivated a lot of people to look at an older piece of media and do the thing where they're like 'if OH did it, why didn't SU'? And one they're different stories, and two, SU was first in helping knock down certain barrier re: queer rep so like... Guess I'll have to see if you've seen Owl House before I continue explaining that one so I don't give spoilers for a very good show lol(have we talked about it before??) I haven't actually seen a lot of flak for SUF, but I definitely watched it ages after it came out and all the people I know in person who have seen it loved it, and since I really never interacted with online SU/F fans, I was unaware of stuff about it that was negative. I genuinely enjoyed it as an epilogue series. Honestly that an the Twin Peaks one are some of the few 'and then' pieces of media I thought were genuinely good next to their OG series. And in a time of sequel/prequel/franchise hell that is such a rarity.
Oh gosh I was genuinely doing a rewatch recently so I should have a better answer for fav arcs. Pearl causing problems via her suffering is pretty great, since she's my fav. Love a silent sufferer who is magically compelled to silence. Also I will never not smack 'Mr Greg' and go I dont know how you fit an entire broadway musical into ten minutes but they fucking did lads God! Getting introduced to Bismuth and that whole bit is always a treat too. Actually Steven, your mom is a war criminal and its pretty important to learn about it xD
Jasper just breaking into laughter on her back after getting into a fight (w Steven?? that bear from earlier??) and finally having to confront she does need to move on or she'll go still and just grow moss. Steven there in a torn shirt like, I can still give you that ride, and Jasper finally being like 'maybe later' and leaving.
Aunt May encouraging Peter to show off his camera so that Nolan can get some good comparison notes on different models. Nolan just being like how well does it take photos while moving at high speeds? Peter being like from a train ?? and Nolan having to remember that humans cant physically move faster than the speed of light... yes like a train.. Poor Mark accidentally setting off the spidey senses bc viltrumites are predators and he mimics his dad in something and Peter just like... pls leave... Maybe thats what finally tips Mark off. Peter going spidey mode in self defense, like he just starts carrying the web slingers around like pepperspray
Cecil diverting resources to track the fishing trips and Donald just being like sir... you could just.. ask to go...
I've seen plenty of real estate agent for evil lair skits I'm laughing thinking about Debbie in them now. Her full on knowing the codes the The New Evil Penthouse downtown bc she was showing it and GoG are just like !! we need that info ?? and Nolan just being like : / My wife's personal integrity about her job is important to her, plus you said to never mix work w my personal life so stop calling
Mark literally being told 'the city can have a hospital or a superpowered cell, it isn't getting both' (forget budget concerns have it be a whole infrastructure power grid thing! it doesnt matter if you get eve to build both for free they cant power them both!!) and him having to confront long term things and for once think about the long term impact a decision could have. Him having to confront wanting a system to change is only a small part of the process, you have to have a viable alternative to the system you plan to replace, because just getting rid of it isn't going to work. Or the system he's leaning on wasn't great and other ppl are moving to get rid of it and now he's stuck in the middle of something. Him being called to disperse protestors outside the penitentiary and Amber being in the front and him being like : /
Yeah clearly anarchist free for all will do great for everyone after the death camps you subjected them to Immortal. what are the supply chains like. how are they eating, was anyone allowed schooling ??? I have questions
lol Amander Walker and Cecil talking. that would be something
While I'm not too familiar with the DCU- your batfam meta posts are intiguing- so in transfering some of the broader strokes from them- I think you tackling a 'Mark isn't Nolan's biological son' fic would be fascinating. Sort of a step to the side of the 'what if Mark never got his powers' fic that sometimes pop up in the fandom
OOOOOO chewing on this currently, hm, the much a distinct flavor of exactly what you’re talking about, but the potential for more family drama depending on WHO knows. Does Mark know?? Is he waiting every day only to be crushed? Does he confused non-Debbie features with Nolan’s? I suppose I’m not the most enthusiastic about non-power AUs, but I think there’s something very fun to explore about Mark having to settle with, if he knows all his life, he will never have powers? I think the trajectory of his dreams will obviously shift, I can see him still having that distinct fatherly idolization, but perhaps embraces being useful to the GDA? Cecil’s number one intern—only intern—curtesy of nepotism, ha! There is something tickling me about Mark taking the Robin Route/Role for the Teen Team in terms of having no powers, just insane skills, BUT there’s something way more delicious about intern Mark when s1e01 happens and Mark tries snooping around to find out the truth about what happened to his Dad.
I wonder if, with Mark having a whole another father, if they’re more or less distant relationship, depending on WHEN Nolan entered Mark’s life? Like if Debbie met Nolan later for this, or just for fun, they dated once, separated (Mark being born during then), then they happened to stumble into each others lives again and Mark’s already been born, anywhere from tween to teenager so there’s a gap in how close they are. I feel like one important aspect of the whole Family Drama is how close they’re supposed to be, a functional, loving family turned upside down? So I wonder what more distance does. I wonder how Nolan copes when his family is entirely human and he can’t project onto Mark.
I love thinking about these, omg.

Bestie, as someone who has never seen newsies and only knows about it through your posts * Waves hand* rant? ramble? elaborate? summarize? whatever you want to call it! Imagine i had never seen Cats and you were about to change my life by telling me about it. Just absolutely go ham telling me literally everything about it. Literally anything. Which version should i watch first? Headcanons? Favorite scenes? Favorite characters? Favorite songs? Whatever! All of the above or another sixth thing i haven't thought of. I am curious about Newsies and i want to know more! Please Share! :D
YES YES YES THANK YOU BESTIE I'M SO EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT NEWSIES
okay so Newsies first started as a movie done by Disney, directed by Kenny Ortega (yes, THAT Kenny Ortega) and with music by Alan Menken, and it was released in 1992, starring Christian Bale as Jack Kelly!
the musical is based off of the 1899 New York Newsies strike, and focuses on the Manhattan borough, led by Jack Kelly, who strike against Joseph Pulitzer. David Jacobs and his younger brother, Les, join the strike, and the newsies work to bring in other boroughs and draw support from other kids working in the city.
now, the frustrating thing is that the stage musical deviates from the movie in a few points:
in the 1992 movie, there's a reporter named Denton, who offers to write about the strike. Also in the 1992 movie is David's sister, Sarah, who is Jack's love interest. the musical basically combines Denton and Sarah into Katherine, who is a writer for the Sun (like Denton) and who is Jack's main love interest.
the 1992 movie makes it VERY easy to figure out which newsie is which, and focuses on the newsies as a whole, and their relationships with each other. the musical is MUCH more centered around just Jack, as well as just his relationship with Katherine. In the 1992 movie, Jack and Sarah's relationship is more background.
i'd personally go with watching the 1992 movie first. it's the entire reason i fell in love with the show, and it's the version i honestly prefer. Christian Bale's Jack is SO soft and wonderful, and i love his interactions with the rest of the newsies. I'm not saying the Broadway version is bad, but it's different, so i'd say do the OG version first!
i honestly think the reason it was easy for me to come into the Cats fandom and start identifying the different cats was because of Newsies lmao. There are so many different background boys, but like i said, the 1992 movie makes it EXTREMELY easy to identify all of them. it's the stage version that makes it ridiculously hard to figure out who is who, which is why i suggest doing the original movie first, and learning the characters from that!
note: the Broadway version (specifically the U.S. tour) added a song for Crutchie called "Letter from the Refuge", which isn't included in the original cast recording, but the pro-shoot they did a few years ago has it in there!
ok so some of my favorite scenes from both the movie and stage show!!!!! (probably most of these will be from the movie lmao)
1992: Kloppman (the owner of the lodging house that the newsies stay in) wakes Jack up, and they have a very adorable father/son-type back and forth with each other
1992: where Racetrack (one of my favorite newsies) is asking for a towel, and Skittery (my other favorite newsie) says "for a buck i might" and the scene is just so PURE and brotherly like???? they're siblings?????
1992: "dear me, i fear the sewer may have backed up during the night" "or is it... the Delancey brothers!" they're little SHITS and i love them
1992: "baby born with three heads" "must be from brooklyn"
1992: gotta highlight @cutesiewooren's boy Blink here, his line "a saturday night with the mayer's daughter" gets me EVERY SINGLE TIME in "king of new york"
broadway: also speaking of "king of new york" it's impossible to talk about it without talking about the broadway line of "and when your famous... the woild... is yer erster!" "ya what?" "ya know, the fancy claim with the pearl inside?"
1992: "your honor, i object" "on what grounds" "on the grounds of Brooklyn" spot conlon my FUCKING beloved
broadway: any of the background dialogue during the "king of new york" tap scene, it's perfect
my favorite songs would probably have to be:
"Carrying the Banner"
"Seize the Day"
"Watch What Happens"
"High Times, Hard Times" (1992 movie)
"Something to Believe In"
"Once and For All"
now for favorite characters!! once again, because the 1992 movie does SUCH a better job at giving each newsie a unique personality and highlights them, it's mainly based off of those versions!
Mush... my love... my boy... my darling... my everything...
Racetrack... Racer... love...
(gotta include both max and ben's racers, they're iconic)
David!!! ofc!!!! my beloved!!!! he's just like me fr!!
spot conlon!!!!!
skittery!!!! i've done a whole appreciation post for him but he!!!!
literally i could name every single newsie bc i love all of them. jack is a given, but i specifically love 1992 Jack. I've been meaning to make a whole analysis post on it, but Christian Bale just really plays such a heartwarming and soft Jack. His interactions with the rest of the newsies, with Sarah, with the adults, you can just feel how much he cares about everyone around him.
a little fun fact about the 1992 movie:
while in production, the newsie boys basically shot a mini-horror movie called "Blood Drips Heavily on Newsies Square" that is the FUNNIEST fucking thing i've ever watched in my life
like it features all of the cast + a lot of the crew, and you can absolutely tell this was made by a bunch of teenage boys who had way too much time on their hands in between filming
you can probably find the whole thing on youtube, and i 100% recommend watching it
and a few cast crossover facts bc i can't resist:
Jess LeProtto (2016 revival Mungojerrie) was Jojo in the original Broadway cast!
Mukeni Nel (who was part of the 2019 international tour as Bill Bailey + Mistoffelees cover, as well as the 2020 Asia tour as Carbucketty) is currently playing Jojo in the UK Tour of Newsies!
Giuseppe Bausilio (2016 revival Carbucketty) was also in the original Broadway cast, and I believe later performed as Racetrack!
Mike Faist (who was a Delancey brother/ensemble member in the original Broadway cast) was the original Connor Murphy in Dear Evan Hansen
quite a few of the OBC newsie actors (Including Jess and Mike) were part of the 2021 West Side Story film!
Jeremy Jordan (OBC Jack Kelly) has done SO much but my favorite fact is that he voices Varian in the Tangled animated series!
also i saw Kara Lindsay (OBC Katherine) as Glinda in Wicked back in 2015 or 2016, and she was absolutely INCREDIBLE
and finally, a few hcs:
Jack is unofficially adopted by the Jacobs family as soon as they meet him, they see this scruffy jaded boy and immediately go "he's ours"
Katherine's newsie name is "Scribble", and ONLY Jack is allowed to call her "Ace"
Sarah's is "Mama Bear" because she can and will go absolutely feral if she sees any of her boys getting hurt
Spot can't swim (idk why, i just think it's funny if he lives near the docks and can't swim to save his life)
no one's actually sure if Specs needs glasses, or if they're fake. at this point, they're too afraid to ask, and Specs just thinks it's absolutely hilarious that they're trying to figure it out.
Patrick's mother (who's shown at the beginning of the movie during "Carrying the Banner") never finds her son, but she, like Mrs. Jacobs and Medda, becomes a type of surrogate mother for a lot of the newsies.
that's all i can think about right now lmao, but i love getting to rant and ramble about one of my absolute favorite musicals of ALL time!!! and you know i'm always down to answer asks about newsies any time, bestie!!
